How to Un-Fog Shower Doors (Without Harsh Chemicals)

If your shower doors are covered with a cloudy white film that never seems to come clean, you're not alone. Hard water deposits, soap scum, and mineral buildup can leave glass looking permanently foggy, even after you've cleaned it.

After trying multiple cleaners and scrubbing methods, I found a simple solution that worked surprisingly well: a razor blade scraper.

Before You Start: Important Safety Warnings

Before trying this method, please keep these precautions in mind:

⚠️ Test a small area first.
Always test an inconspicuous spot before cleaning the entire door.

⚠️ Not all shower doors are the same.
This method is generally intended for smooth glass shower doors. Do not use a razor scraper on:

  • Plastic or acrylic shower doors
  • Textured or frosted surfaces
  • Tinted or coated glass
  • Any surface that scratches easily

⚠️ Use caution when handling razor blades.
The blade is extremely sharp. Keep fingers away from the cutting edge and store the scraper safely when not in use. 

⚠️ Use gentle pressure.
Let the blade do the work. Excessive force can increase the risk of scratching the surface.

How To Clean Shower Doors

Step 1: Hold the Blade at a Low Angle

Position the scraper so the blade is nearly flat against the glass. Avoid digging the corners into the surface. You can wet the glass first to help the blade glide smoothly and reduce the chance of scratching.

Step 2: Scrape the Buildup

Using slow, even strokes, scrape away the mineral deposits and soap scum. You will often see a surprising amount of residue coming off the glass.

Step 3: Wipe Clean

Use a microfiber cloth to wipe away the loosened buildup.

Step 4: Repeat as Needed

For heavily fogged areas, you may need a few passes.

My Results

My shower doors had years of hard water buildup and soap scum that cleaning products never fully removed. After using the scraper, the glass looked brand new.

Tips to Keep Shower Doors Clear Longer

  • Squeegee the glass after each shower
  • Keep the bathroom fan running for 1/2 hour after each shower
  • Wipe down doors weekly with a microfiber cloth
  • Address hard water spots before they become severe

Final Thoughts

This razor blade scraper turned out to be the most effective tool that I've found for removing years of stubborn hard water deposits and soap scum from glass shower doors.

Just remember: test a small area first, make sure your shower doors are compatible with this method, and always use caution when working with razor blades.
